What is my hair type quiz?

Our hair type quiz is a free online test that helps you discover your natural hair type in just 3 minutes. By answering 10 questions about your hair's behavior, curl pattern, shrinkage, and texture, you'll find out your exact type from 1A to 4C based on the Andre Walker system. The quiz also provides personalized care tips and product recommendations.

What is type 4 hair?

Type 4 hair is coily or kinky hair with very tight curl patterns. It's the most fragile hair type and requires the most moisture. 4A hair has defined, tight coils about the width of a crochet needle. 4B hair has a zigzag pattern rather than defined coils. 4C hair has the tightest coils with minimal definition, often appearing as a dense afro. All Type 4 subtypes experience significant shrinkage (50-75% or more).

What is 4C hair type?

4C hair is the tightest coil pattern in the hair typing system. 4C hair type characteristics include: very tight zigzag coils with minimal curl definition, extreme shrinkage (up to 75%), dense and cotton-like texture, and high fragility. 4C hair requires intensive moisture, gentle detangling, protective styling, and heavy creams or butters.

What is 3A hair type?

3A hair has loose, well-defined curls about the size of sidewalk chalk. 3A hair type is the loosest curl pattern in Type 3, with big, bouncy curls that have an S-shape. It tends to be shiny and has less frizz than tighter curl types. 3A curls can easily be weighed down by heavy products.

What is 3B and 3C hair?

3B hair has springy ringlets about the size of a Sharpie marker with more volume and bounce than 3A. 3C hair has tight corkscrews about the size of a pencil or straw. It's the tightest Type 3 pattern with densely packed curls. 3C hair type experiences more shrinkage (40-50%) and needs moisture-rich products.

What is type 2 wavy hair?

Type 2 hair is wavy hair between straight and curly. 2A hair has loose, barely-there waves. 2B hair has more defined S-shaped waves from mid-length. 2C hair has well-defined waves starting near roots with some loose spiral curls. Wavy hair is prone to frizz and can be styled straight or enhanced to look curlier.

What is type 1 straight hair?

Type 1 hair is completely straight with no wave or curl. 1A hair is very fine and soft, often limp. 1B hair is medium-textured with more body. 1C hair is coarse straight hair that's thicker and more resistant to styling. Straight hair tends to get oily quickly and benefits from volumizing products.

Can you change your hair type?

You cannot permanently change your hair type—your curl pattern is determined by genetics. However, your hair type can change naturally due to hormones, medications, aging, or damage. Many people discover hidden curls after stopping heat styling. Chemical treatments can temporarily alter texture, but new growth returns to your natural pattern.

What products should I use for my hair type?

Type 1: lightweight products, volumizing mousse, clarifying shampoo. Type 2: curl-enhancing mousse, anti-frizz serum. Type 3: leave-in conditioner, curl cream, gel. Type 4: heavy butters, oils, LOC method, deep conditioning. Use our ingredient scanner to check products.

How do I know my hair type without a quiz?

Wash your hair, skip products, let it air dry completely, then observe. Straight: no wave. Wavy: loose S-bends. Curly: spirals. Coily: tight coils or zigzags. For subtypes (A, B, C), compare curl size to objects: chalk (3A), marker (3B), pencil (3C), crochet needle (4A).

💡 Pro tip: Your hair can have characteristics of multiple types! Many people have different textures in different sections. Focus on your dominant pattern and adjust products for areas that need different treatment.
