Is my shampoo safe?

5 ingredients your hair products shouldn't contain

Most people don't read ingredient labels — and brands count on that. These five categories show up in thousands of shampoos, conditioners, and masks, quietly causing damage you'll only notice months later.

Upload your product label above and we'll flag every one of them instantly.

Sulfates (SLS / SLES)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Aggressive detergents that strip natural oils. Especially damaging for curly, color-treated, and dry hair.

Non-water-soluble silicones

Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Amodimethicone

Coat hair in a synthetic layer that blocks moisture. Cause buildup that makes hair dull and limp.

Drying alcohols

Isopropyl Alcohol, SD Alcohol, Alcohol Denat.

Evaporate fast and severely dehydrate hair, causing frizz and breakage.

Parabens

Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben

Preservatives linked to potential hormone disruption. Many consumers and brands now choose paraben-free formulas.

Heavy waxes & mineral oils

Petrolatum, Paraffinum Liquidum, Cera Microcristallina

Petroleum-derived ingredients that clog follicles and suffocate strands.

What our scanner detects in every product

Not just the bad stuff — we identify beneficial ingredients too, so you know exactly what's working for your hair and what's not.

Harsh Cleansers

SLS, SLES, ALS, and ammonium lauryl sulfate. These strip natural oils and irritate sensitive scalps. Especially harmful for curly and color-treated hair.

Non-Soluble Silicones

Dimethicone, cyclomethicone, and amodimethicone cause buildup that blocks moisture. They make hair look shiny short-term but cause long-term dryness.

Drying Alcohols

Isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol, and alcohol denat evaporate moisture from the hair shaft. They're different from fatty alcohols, which are actually beneficial.

Moisturizing Agents

Glycerin, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol. These humectants attract water into the hair shaft and keep it hydrated throughout the day.

Proteins & Bond Builders

Keratin, hydrolyzed wheat protein, silk amino acids, and bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate (Olaplex). These repair and strengthen damaged hair from the inside out.

Natural Oils & Butters

Argan oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. These seal moisture, reduce frizz, and add shine. The right oil depends on your porosity and hair type.

Who It's For

Built for every hair concern

CGM followers

Instantly check if a product is Curly Girl Method approved — no sulfates, no non-soluble silicones, no drying alcohols. Stop guessing and scan the label.

Color-treated hair

Sulfates strip color faster than anything else. Our scanner flags every sulfate variant so you can protect your investment and keep color vibrant longer.

Sensitive scalp

Fragrance, essential oils, and certain preservatives can trigger itching, redness, and flaking. We flag known scalp irritants so you can shop safely.

Product junkies

Buying a new product every week? Scan before you buy. Know exactly what you're putting on your hair and avoid wasting money on products with the same harmful ingredients.

Common questions about ingredient checking

Is this ingredient checker really free?

Yes, you get one free scan without signing up. After that, create a free account to continue scanning. Premium users get unlimited scans with deeper analysis and product recommendations.

What types of hair products can I scan?

Any hair product with an ingredient list: shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, leave-in conditioners, styling gels, mousses, serums, oils, heat protectants, scalp treatments, and dry shampoos. If it has an ingredient label, we can analyze it.

How accurate is the AI ingredient analysis?

Our scanner uses GPT-4o Vision for image recognition and a curated database of 3,000+ cosmetic ingredients. It achieves 98% accuracy in identifying ingredients and their categories (sulfates, silicones, parabens, etc). For text input, accuracy is even higher since there's no OCR step.

What does the 0-100 safety score mean?

The score reflects overall ingredient safety: 80–100 is excellent (clean, gentle formula), 60–79 is good (minor concerns), 40–59 is moderate (contains potentially irritating ingredients), and below 40 means the product has multiple harsh or harmful ingredients. The score is adjusted based on your hair type and concerns.

Can I check if a product is CGM (Curly Girl Method) approved?

Yes. Our scanner automatically flags non-CGM ingredients: sulfates, non-water-soluble silicones, and drying alcohols. If none of these are found, the product is CGM-friendly. We also note water-soluble silicones (like PEG-modified dimethicone) which some CGM followers allow.

Photo scan vs text input — which is better?

Both work great. Photo scanning is faster — just snap the ingredient label and our AI reads it using computer vision. Text input is slightly more accurate since there's no image processing step. Use photo when you're in a store, and text when you're browsing online and can copy the ingredient list.
