How do I know if I have 1A hair?

Your hair falls completely flat from root to tip with no bend, even after air-drying. A single strand is almost invisible when held up to the light, and it feels silky rather than textured between your fingers. Curling irons rarely hold for more than an hour.

Key characteristics of 1A hair

  • The finest strand diameter of any hair type
  • No curl pattern whatsoever — perfectly straight
  • Very high natural shine because light reflects off a flat cuticle
  • Shows scalp oil within 12–24 hours of washing
  • Almost impossible to hold a curl or style without product

The one thing 1A hair struggles with most

Volume. Type 1A has the thinnest strands and the flattest cuticle, so it lies close to the scalp and reflects oil quickly. Nearly every product marketed as "nourishing" is too heavy for it.

What 1A hair needs

  • Lightweight volumising mousse applied at the roots only
  • Frequent gentle cleansing to keep oil from flattening the roots
  • Dry shampoo between washes for root lift
  • Silicone-free formulas that will not coat and weigh strands down

What 1A hair should avoid

  • Heavy oils and butters — they will make 1A hair look greasy instantly
  • Rich leave-in conditioners applied anywhere near the roots
  • Conditioner on the scalp; mid-lengths and ends only
  • Thick creams and heavy styling waxes

1A hair and porosity

1A hair is most commonly low porosity, which means products sit on the surface rather than absorbing. Lightweight, water-based formulas work far better than rich ones.
